About Dawn Spinks

Dawn Spinks is one of Australia’s leading counsellors. Thousands of clients have passed through the doors of her Queensland premises and yet time and time again she has been amazed by the number that weren’t clear about what counselling is all about or what benefits may be had by visiting a professional counsellor.

Originally from England, Dawn trained in both education and psychology at London University. With an obvious aptitude for the field she was invited to do a Phd, but decided against it, opting in favour of getting some hands on experience in the profession first.  Dawn worked as a therapist in a London hospital and thrived in the team environment. She says: “It opened my eyes to a more holistic approach to counselling and managing issues.”

Dawn has worked in sales and marketing, established a London promotions company, worked on the Quit Smoking program in West Australia, Injury Prevention in Queensland (specializing in drowning prevention and legislation), was manager of the Queensland Injury Surveillance Unit and Director of Queensland Safe Communities Support Centre, both based at the Mater Children’s Hospital, Brisbane. Dawn is currently completing her PhD at UQ researching the impact of child drowning death and the availability of appropriate support services. Dawn is the author of Nothing Changes if Nothing Changes, a practical Guide to Finding the Right Counsellor,  and has had a successful private counselling practice in the Redlands for 16 years.

Spinks and Associates opened in 1997, a practice Dawn established because she believed she had a down to earth, practical hands on approach to offer people, backed up by good professional academic research and training. Dawn has enjoyed a highly successful career and has made a significant difference to helping others. She hopes that ‘Nothing Changes if Nothing Changes’ will help get the ball rolling on educating people about counselling and that more people will become aware of its advantages.
