Monday, May 11th – Guest speaker at National Seniors meeting, Redland Bowls Club, Poinciana Avenue, Victoria Point. Time:10:00am

On May 11th I was priveleged to address the National Seniors Australia Victoria Point Branch monthly meeting.
The reception was delighfully warm and following my presntation on the book, I spoke with a number of the members about the benefits of counselling. My passion for writing the book in the first instance was to share as much knowledge about what counselling is, and what it isn't, in order for more people to access the services once they recognise the benefits.
Apart from selling a few books, I was heartened to have some meaningful converstionas and hopefully have offered some pathways for family members and friends to change some of the difficult life challenges they find themselves faced with.
One gentleman made a very significan comment to me. He mentioned that as the audience were mainly in the retirement age range, most had battled challenges through their lives, war, the Depression and also 'depression'
over the years - long before counselling as it is today, was available. My reply was that yes, for many, family and friends, and often the local pastor can help us get through many challenges. A sense of community is so important and probably existed more in the past, than it does today (sad, but true). However, there are some instances when the help required is greater than that which family and friends can offer, and an objective, professional counsellor may be able to guide you through those issues, and refer if necessary.
I guess it is a little like electricity. People managed without it before it existed, but once it became available, it enhanced the quality of life for many. The availability of professional counselling, and the understanding from the client as to what to expect in the process, offers the opportunity for increased quality of life.
Thank you to all those who attended yesterday and enriched my ubderstanding.
Hope to see you again at Indigiscapes on June 1st and over the years in our beautiful Redlands Shire.
